Rabbits/Hares Nature Study

the-outdoor-hourThis week we studied rabbits and hares. We read from The Burgess Animal Book for Children. It is so awesome!  Aside from the animals talking, the book teaches true nature study in a storybook format. Even for me it is interesting. It is very detailed and keeps us captured.

A few facts I found fascinating, that indeed I did not know, were that some rabbit’s fur coats actually change color with the seasons! In addition, there is a rabbit called the marsh rabbit who actually enjoys swimming. In fact they use this ability to keep away from their predators. Rabbits are much like cats when it comes to the water…they don’t like it! However, there seems to be an exeception to every rule, no?

We learned how rabbits differ in size, not only overall, but thier legs, ears, tails. Each has a different way of protecting itself from those hungry carnivores, including diving into holes, diving into ponds or simply using thier hind legs to outrun them.

Below is Gabriella’s (6) journal entry for this week. She is also creating a small Rabbit story in booklet form. She will be sending it to her Grandpa who just loves rabbits.

She colored the word “Mammals” using the different colors rabbits can be. The picture below shows a marsh rabbit swimming in the water.

  2. Hello my friend. I think I’m going to try to do that homeschooling theme week a week from this coming Monday. That will give me time to gather things, take pictures, post and let people know. I might make a little Picture Thingy to go along with it, that we can post on our blogs to let people know about it. I will start spreading the word next week and see if other Charlotte Mason Homeschoolers want to join in. Does that sound good? I think it will be great to gleam ideas off each other. I have some specific ideas for certain days so that the posts will be kind of categorized. Like for example. One day can be our favorite “real” books. Another day can be a day in the life of a Charlotte Mason homeschooler. You know stuff like that. Let me know your thoughts. Talk to you soon.
    Hugs.

  4. [...] good amounts of time on creating a mini book about rabbits, as well as creating this week’s nature journal page which was also on rabbits. We finished up some books we were reading: Sing Down the Moon by Scott [...]

  5. We used the same notebook page but what an imaginative idea to color the word mammal in the colors of a rabbit. Excellent!
